Retaining Wall Sleepers
Choose a Concrete Sleepers Retaining Wall for Stability and Strength
A retaining wall is often required on sloping ground to prevent landslip or if the land is to be levelled into terraced areas. A concrete retaining wall often works best because it has the strength and rigidity to prevent soil movement and has the durability to remain in place for a very long time with little or no need for maintenance.
Often the choice is between a timber or cement sleeper retaining wall. Whilst timber has its attributes, it is prone to deterioration over time and will not last as long as concrete.
Building a Sleeper Retaining Wall
Sloping land can be a hazard and lead to falls. So installing a retaining wall can help to level out the land and make it easier to access and much more usable. We have a variety of sizes and colours of sleepers so you can install a charcoal concrete sleeper retaining wall for a dramatic effect or a grey concrete sleeper retaining wall for a more contemporary look. To get the desired effect, however, you need to build your wall with care.
Careful planning is essential, so you need to decide where the wall will go and its required height and length. This will enable you to order the correct number of concrete sleepers and you need to allow for the bottom layer of sleepers to be partly buried in the soil. Read More
Here’s a step-by-step guide to building your sleeper retaining wall:
- Dig the Post Holes: Begin by digging post holes at the required intervals along the length of the trench. The depth and width of the holes should be sufficient to securely accommodate the posts. If required, have the post holes checked by a Building Certifier to ensure they meet the necessary standards.
- Install the Posts: Once the post holes are dug, position the posts in the holes and concrete them in place. Ensure the posts are properly aligned before the concrete sets. Leave the posts to stand until the concrete has fully cured, ensuring they are stable and ready for the next step.
- Prepare the Trench: Dig out a trench slightly wider than the width of the sleepers and to a depth of about half a sleeper. To aid drainage, add a layer of gravel at the bottom of the trench and compact it well.
- Position the Sleepers: After the posts have cured, begin placing the sleepers between the posts, fitting them securely inside the two flanges on each post. Continue adding sleepers along the length of the trench, stacking them up to the required height. Ensure each course of sleepers is level and, for added strength, stagger the joints in the same way as brickwork.
- Final Touches: After all sleepers are in place, fill the space behind the wall with gravel to enhance stability and drainage. Finally, backfill the area behind the sleepers with soil, compacting it to level the ground.
By following these steps and taking the time to plan properly, you’ll have a sturdy, attractive concrete sleepers retaining wall that not only improves the functionality of your outdoor space but also adds to its aesthetic appeal.
Also, add gravel behind the sleepers and compact it to provide stability and drainage. Once the wall is complete, fill the space behind it with soil so the ground is levelled. You then have a wall that will provide the necessary support and that will last for many years.
Benefits of a Sleeper Retaining Wall
Our sleeper retaining wall using concrete sleepers can be built by most people to create a sturdy wall. However, if you don’t feel able to complete the job, enlist the services of a professional to do it for you.
The sleepers are available in a variety of sizes but are generally large which means a wall can be built quickly and without the need for mortar joints. The finished wall will have an aesthetic appeal and structural integrity, making concrete retaining wall structures a great choice of building material.
Additional benefits include:
- installation in all weather conditions due to mortar not being required
- resistance to fire, rot and insects that can be a problem for wooden sleepers
- good drainage When the correct Agi Pipe is used for your application
- installed in a relatively small space so maximising the area for other uses
- extremely sturdy and durable so will last for many years with little or no maintenance needed.
