Functionality and Superior Aesthetic Qualities of Concrete Railway Sleepers in Australia
Many people think of concrete railway sleepers as being grey, flat and featureless. Although it’s accepted that they are strong, durable and functional, they’re not necessarily something that is necessarily considered for a garden or landscaping project.
Modern concrete sleepers for sale these days, however, retain all these features but in addition, are extremely attractive. Real-Crete has developed advanced manufacturing techniques that ensure their concrete sleepers combine both durability and aesthetic appeal, making them ideal for any landscaping project.
As concrete sleeper suppliers, we have a broad variety of sleepers available that are of different sizes, colours and textures, making them eminently suitable for any landscape design that aims to enhance the appearance as well as the functionality of a garden.
Ideal Garden Construction Materials from Concrete Railway Sleeper Suppliers
Concrete sleepers in garden design can be used for a variety of purposes:
- to create retaining sleeper walls that hold back soil at different levels or to separate various parts of the garden or mark a boundary
- for paths, often interspersed with gravel or chippings to create a rustic effect
- to edge paths, lawns or flower beds
- to create raised beds, where crops and flowers can be grown without the need for bending
- for seating, steps and other garden features.
The possibilities are almost endless, but garden designers are often unsure whether it is best to use timber or concrete sleepers for their projects. The latter have improved dramatically over recent years and now have several advantages over their timber counterparts:
- Concrete is stronger than timber, especially when reinforced, and can withstand the great pressure that retaining walls are put under due to the weight of the soil behind. Concrete sleeper posts provide a solid foundation for building retaining walls that need to withstand significant pressure, ensuring long-term stability.
- Timber should be treated and, if this is done properly, should last around 25 years. Concrete, however, will last for many decades and doesn’t rot, distort or suffer from insects.
- Timber sleepers can be cheaper to buy but, since they don’t last as long, will tend to be more expensive in the long term.
- Natural timber may have a better appearance, but concrete has a greater variety of colours and textures, and can often have a realistic wood appearance.
- Timber can rot, warp and be infested with pests, so needs to be inspected frequently for deterioration and remedial action taken if necessary. Concrete, on the other hand, may simply need an occasional brush or wash down to remove dirt.
- Both concrete and timber sleepers are easy-to-use building materials, requiring no mortar joints and providing a quick construction process due to their size.
Always Consider Concrete Sleepers for any Garden Project
Concrete sleepers are extremely versatile, functional and attractive, being a stylish and practical material for many building projects. Sleepers for garden projects provide a versatile solution, allowing you to create distinct and durable features that enhance both the functionality and visual appeal of your outdoor space. They are simpler and quicker to use than brick or stone, are more durable than timber and should always be considered as part of any garden planning. Aside from concrete sleepers, a post-rail fence is an effective option for delineating spaces within your garden, offering a blend of rustic charm and robust functionality.
Whether you are a professional landscaper or an amateur gardener, concrete sleepers can add to the appearance and practicality of your garden. The different colours, textures and sizes of concrete sleepers allow you to add structure and interest to any space and help you create the ideal garden. Choose a Right
A retaining wall is often required on sloping ground to prevent landslip or if the land is to be levelled into terraced areas. A concrete retaining wall often works best because it has the strength and rigidity to prevent soil movement and has the durability to remain in place for a very long time with little or no need for maintenance.
Often the choice is between a timber or cement sleeper retaining wall. Whilst timber has its attributes, it is prone to deterioration over time and will not last as long as concrete.
Building a Sleeper Retaining Wall
Sloping land can be a hazard and lead to falls. So installing a retaining wall can help to level out the land and make it easier to access and much more usable. We have a variety of sizes and colours of sleepers so you can install a charcoal concrete sleeper retaining wall for a dramatic effect or a grey concrete sleeper retaining wall for a more contemporary look. To get the desired effect, however, you need to build your wall with care.
Careful planning is essential, so you need to decide where the wall will go and its required height and length. This will enable you to order the correct number of concrete sleepers and you need to allow for the bottom layer of sleepers to be partly buried in the soil.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to building your sleeper retaining wall:
- Dig the Post Holes: Begin by digging post holes at the required intervals along the length of the trench. The depth and width of the holes should be sufficient to securely accommodate the posts. If required, have the post holes checked by a Building Certifier to ensure they meet the necessary standards.
- Install the Posts: Once the post holes are dug, position the posts in the holes and concrete them in place. Ensure the posts are properly aligned before the concrete sets. Leave the posts to stand until the concrete has fully cured, ensuring they are stable and ready for the next step.
- Prepare the Trench: Dig out a trench slightly wider than the width of the sleepers and to a depth of about half a sleeper. To aid drainage, add a layer of gravel at the bottom of the trench and compact it well.
- Position the Sleepers: After the posts have cured, begin placing the sleepers between the posts, fitting them securely inside the two flanges on each post. Continue adding sleepers along the length of the trench, stacking them up to the required height. Ensure each course of sleepers is level and, for added strength, stagger the joints in the same way as brickwork.
- Final Touches: After all sleepers are in place, fill the space behind the wall with gravel to enhance stability and drainage. Finally, backfill the area behind the sleepers with soil, compacting it to level the ground.
By following these steps and taking the time to plan properly, you’ll have a sturdy, attractive concrete sleepers retaining wall that not only improves the functionality of your outdoor space but also adds to its aesthetic appeal.
Also, add gravel behind the sleepers and compact it to provide stability and drainage. Once the wall is complete, fill the space behind it with soil so the ground is levelled. You then have a wall that will provide the necessary support and that will last for many years.
